You may be considering adding an infographic assignment to your course. Infographics can be a great alternative assignment to a paper or presentation and provide students with the opportunity to think about concepts visually!
Types of Infographics
There are many different learning situations where infographics can be used. Here are some!
- Informational – Do you want your students to define concepts? (Example: What is xxxx?)
- Statistical – Do you want your students to show percentages/graphs related to a topic?
- Timeline – Do you want your students to show dates, trends, events on a timeline?
- Process – Do you want your students to break down complex steps?
- Geographic – Do you want your students to share facts and statistics about states or different locations?
- Hierarchical – Do you want your students to organize information? (Think organization charts or animal kingdom branches)
- Lists – Do you want your students to share different types of something or ways to do something? (Types of cover letter formats or 9 ways to avoid getting sick)

There are a number of free software programs available that have infographic templates that you can use for your assignment!

Here is a rubric you could use to assess an infographic assignment:

Content Clarity and Accuracy | The information presented in the infographic is clear and easily understood; at least four accurate facts/concepts are displayed in the infographic. Details support the main idea without distracting with clutter. | Topic and main ideas are clear; at least three accurate facts are displayed. Detail is added to support each main idea with minimal clutter. | The topic is given but the main ideas are unclear or lacking. More detail is needed for understanding. Some details are distracting. Two accurate facts are displayed. | 25 pts |
Graphics | The graphics used represent information appropriately. Color, shape, size, and arrangement of graphics are eye-catching and contribute meaning to the overall message. | Most graphics represent the information appropriately.
